Blood Bank Compliance with the i.C3® Information Center

The i.C3® Information Center is a touchscreen user interface integrated into i.Series® refrigerators, freezers, and Pro Line platelet incubators from Helmer Scientific. The i.C3® provides intelligent diagnostic information and temperature data, while providing security features to keep the information safe. It consolidates everything you need to know about the status of your storage device in one secure location.

The i.C3® supports transfusion services and blood centers in their efforts to meet regulations for storing blood products. AABB Standards require that the storage temperatures of refrigerators, freezers, and platelet incubators be monitored. The standards also state that, for storage of blood or blood components, the temperature shall be monitored continuously and recorded at least every 4 hours.

The i.C3® Information Center supports compliance with AABB Standards by constantly monitoring the temperature inside a blood storage unit. High or low temperature alarms activate if the temperature exceeds or falls below the alarm limits. In addition, the i.C3® monitors other factors that could impact the temperature, such as door openings and power failure.

Additional features, such as an onboard temperature graph, event log, and downloadable temperature and event files can help support compliance with regulatory requirements. The i.C3® also offers automatic alarm testing. Not only does automatic alarm testing make routine alarm checks a more efficient process, these tests are recorded in the event log along with the temperature at which the alarm activated. This can help blood banks meet the College of American Pathologists (CAP) requirements to clearly show the temperature at which the alarm activated during an alarm test.

A series of videos has been created to demonstrate the features of the i.C3® Information Center. The first video of the series is an overview that provides an introduction to the i.C3®. It highlights the information available on the home screen and introduces major functions. Additional videos will provide a closer look at these capabilities and more.
