Each test comes with manufacturer’s Instructions for Use (IFU) that defines the storage requirements for the kit. When refrigerated or frozen storage is specified, test kits must be stored within a precise temperature range to ensure the accuracy of test results. CDC [guidance](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/broad-based-testing.html) requires that storage temperatures for coronavirus test kits be monitored. To avoid the risks associated with false-negative results for an infected individual, it is critical that laboratory staff be alerted to out-of-range conditions. This can be achieved by using medical-grade storage units with built-in alarm monitoring. At a minimum, a medical-grade refrigerator should include alarms for high and low temperatures, and for conditions that could adversely affect the temperature, such as leaving the door open or a power failure. Alarms are generated if the temperature rises above or falls below the acceptable range. Alarms for power failure and the door being left open for an extended period are also included. It is also important for the alarms on the refrigerator or freezer to have a built-in battery back-up. This enables the system to emit alarms during a power failure, so users will be alerted when the power has been out long enough to cause a temperature excursion.
