January is National Blood Donor Month, and in 2021, donations are needed more than ever. In the United States, someone needs a blood transfusion every two seconds. This person could be an accident victim, someone battling cancer, a new mother with a complicated delivery, or a patient fighting COVID-19 in need of convalescent plasma.
The month of January was designated National Blood Donor Month more than 50 years ago. It was selected because January is one of the most challenging times for blood centers to collect enough to meet demand. At this time of year, winter weather can make it more difficult for donors to get to their local collection sites. In addition, seasonal illness may prevent some individuals from donating.
This year, the problem is compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affects many of the country's high school, college and workplace blood drives. Low-yield or canceled events mean that donations continue to lag. The supply of COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) must also be tracked carefully, as surging cases mean the current inventory could quickly become depleted.
