The Importance of Point-of-Care Access to Medications

BD Pyxis™ ES Refrigerator with Helmer Access Technology

Over the last decade, facilities have slowly been moving away from a centralized distribution model to a decentralized or point-of-care distribution model. More than half of facilities rely on automatic dispensing cabinets to support efficient, point-of-care distribution.

Automatic Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) can help facilities improve medication access, ensure accuracy and safety, and prevent diversion or waste. According to a recent survey by Pharmacy Purchasing and Products magazine, 69 percent of facilities use ADCs as their primary means of drug dispensing, while more than half plan to increase capacity of their cabinets over the next three years. Medication distribution methods continue to trend toward more point-of-care models. While much of the focus on ADCs remains on ambient medications, refrigerated meds should be considered in this delivery method.

Temperature-sensitive medications not only require tracking, organization, and security, they also need to be monitored for proper storage temperatures, making the process of managing them even more difficult than medications stored at ambient temperatures.

The industry-first BD Pyxis™ ES Refrigerator with Helmer Access Technology provides integrated and secure, single line-item access to high-risk and high-value refrigerated medications. The ES Refrigerator is an integrated medical-grade storage unit that can help improve medication access, ensure accuracy and safety, as well as reduce the risk of diversion.

BD Pyxis™ ES Refrigerator Benefits:

Medication Safety: Individual locking bins allow for safe and secure storage of high-risk and high-value refrigerated medications.

Medication Security: Helps prevent diversion and its associated risk to medication safety and patient care.

Medical-Grade Refrigeration: Helps ensure medications and vaccines are stored at optimal temperatures to help reduce waste and support regulatory compliance.
