Each summer, Helmer Scientific takes on a new look as we have many new faces join the Helmer team through our collegiate summer intern program. Every year over a dozen collegiate summer interns come to explore their talents, develop new skills and learn about career opportunities in the areas of engineering, manufacturing, customer service, and marketing, to name a few. As a recruiter, I am actively engaged in the hiring process and get to meet all the bright young people that come to Helmer. It is not only their capabilities that impress me, but also their enthusiasm to embrace the company’s values and culture. One of the initiatives of the summer internship program is to organize a generosity project where a group of interns and their team leaders come together to serve people in need in our community.
This summer, 18 Helmer interns and their leaders volunteered at the West Indy Community Day and Back-To-School Bash alongside Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center, a local organization committed to serve 8,000 struggling individuals and families on the Southwest side of Indianapolis. The Back-To-School Bash focused on getting children of low income families the supplies they needed for the new school year. Understanding the difficulties of going back to school unprepared, Helmer interns took a special interest in this event. They vigorously helped set up and distribute school supplies for hundreds of families. However, the Helmer summer interns’ dedication didn’t end there. They also recorded the Back-to-School Bash service project and entered their video in the Super Service Challenge. As a result, they will receive a Helmer grant for the Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center, as well as potentially win additional funding if their video receives the most votes in the challenge.
A project of this magnitude serves as an example of the core values we look for in future employees. In turn, this gives our interns visibility into the Helmer culture of generosity and positions us to continually attract and retain world class talent.
