Value-Based Initiatives in the Clinical Lab

As the healthcare model in the United States transitions from volume-based to value-based care, clinical laboratories are seeking innovative strategies for adding value to the overall healthcare equation. The role of the clinical lab has traditionally been to provide testing and diagnostic results. Moving forward, laboratories will need to provide these services but also continue to add value by expanding their role in improving patient care.

Representatives from several hospital and laboratory systems have formed a group to collaborate on a vision for the role clinical laboratories play in the healthcare system. This initiative is known as “Project Santa Fe.” They are expanding their focus from developing a vision to identifying actionable initiatives that laboratories can take to add value to patient care.

CAP Today has published an article called “Clin Lab 2.0:  Add value, make patients better.” The article shares interviews with five Project Santa Fe participants and the approaches their labs are taking to add value in their organizations. Some examples include:

  • Providing a clinical decision support tool that helps clinicians order the right testing.
  • Collaboration between laboratories and physicians to reduce unnecessary tests, lowering costs and improving financial results.
  • Achieving better patient outcomes and reducing costs by identifying ways to improve the use of tests for specific patients, providing a more accurate diagnosis and targeted therapy.
  • Analyzing data on laboratory results to identify actionable opportunities for improvement.
  • Utilizing retrospective population health studies to build predictive models that can be applied to improve patient care.

Clinical laboratories should be able to focus on initiatives that add value to patient care as well as providing accurate test results. Helmer Scientific supports these efforts by providing reliable medical-grade cold storage products that our customers can depend on.
