Ultra-Low Freezers: Quality Design Keeps Heat Out

Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer Door

Reliable cold-storage equipment plays a vital role in safeguarding precious samples and biological products for patient care and research. Quality and performance should be at the foundation of how an Ultra-Low Freezer is designed. For example, it seems clear that Ultra-Low freezers should be designed to protect samples from unnecessary exposure to warmer temperatures.

Heat Barrier System™

When developing the i.Series® Ultra-Low Freezers, Helmer Scientific recognized the importance of keeping heat out. The Heat Barrier System™ was developed to provide multiple levels of heat containment.

Outer Door

The outer door is robust with 3 heavy-duty, adjustable hinges. Premium insulation is used in all outer doors. A specially designed single-handed door handle provides smooth operation for easy opening and secure closing to prevent door leaks.

Frame and Cabinet

An ice-resistant sealing surface maintains a better seal that improves temperature uniformity and minimizes interior frost formation. An energy efficient hot gas loop surrounds the frame, resulting in a virtually frost-free door frame. Also, advanced composite panels reduce the amount of heat transfer.

Inner Doors

One element that is particularly important to the performance of an Ultra-Low Freezer is the design of the inner doors. It is typical for Ultra-Low Freezers to have an inner door for each shelf within the unit, in addition to a heavy-duty outer door. This effectively creates enclosed storage compartments inside the freezer. The inner doors should be designed to prevent warm air from entering the closed compartments and impacting the temperature of the samples inside. When evaluating an Ultra-Low Freezer, there are some questions that should be asked about the design of the inner doors:

  • Are they well insulated?
  • Are they structurally rigid to prevent sagging?
  • Do they utilize gaskets to seal the space around the inner doors?

The i.Series® line of Ultra-Low Temperature Freezers features structurally reinforced, insulated inner doors that provide a tighter closure to minimize change in compartment temperature during routine door openings. In addition, dual-blade gaskets prevent the intrusion of warm air, sealing out heat and moisture.
