When a bleeding emergency occurs, it is important to stop the loss of blood as quickly as possible. Professional emergency response personnel may arrive within minutes; however, bystanders will always be first on the scene. It is possible for an injured person who is bleeding to die within 5 minutes, so someone who is already there is in the best position to provide immediate care.
AABB is encouraging its membership to join the Stop the Bleed campaign, an initiative to raise public awareness of methods to stop potentially life-threatening bleeding. Sponsored by several organizations, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the American College of Surgeons, and AABB, Stop the Bleed supports grassroots efforts for more people to become trained and equipped to assist in a bleeding emergency.
The campaign strives to save lives by fostering public confidence and promoting citizen engagement in responding quickly to bleeding emergencies. Stop the Bleed provides in-person training and online resources that teach the public more about controlling bleeding and responding to health emergencies.
Helmer Scientific would like to express our appreciation for those supporting the Stop the Bleed campaign, as well as to the blood center and hospital staff that collect and transfuse life-saving therapies. For more information on blood donation, view our blood donation infographic.
