Since 2009, Helmer Scientific has had the opportunity to participate in Rwanda’s story by coaching entrepreneurs of small and medium-sized businesses through Bigger Future, as well as engaging in an international partnership with Robert Bayigamba, owner of the country’s largest furniture manufacturer. Earlier this year, Helmer Scientific hosted Bayigamba at the headquarter facility for a four-day knowledge sharing experience to help improve his manufacturing operation in Rwanda.
This week Helmer continued the relationship by bringing a Rwandan Sports Delegation to Indianapolis. The group met with local leadership to learn about the city’s sports development model. They plan to explore possible business relationships in sports tourism and events, marketing, management and basketball.
The Sagamore Institute sponsored an event featuring former Head Coach and Technical Director of NBA Africa, Joby Wright and Pacer’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Community and Public Relations, Bill Benner.
The delegation included the President of the Rwanda National Olympic Committee, the Permanent Secretary of the Rwanda Ministry of Sport and Culture, and the President of the Rwanda Basketball Federation.
The Rwandan economy has made significant strides over the last 20 years and has been growing at a rate of 7 percent since 2010. The country is also widely touted as one of the least corrupt, safest and most business-friendly countries in Africa. Rwanda National Olympic Committee president Robert Bayimgamba has challenged Rwandans to take sports as culture and urged his country to teach people to respect and create friendships through sports and to love sports. With its growing tourism industry, Rwanda sees an opportunity to develop itself into a continental sports hub.
