Pre-transfusion testing refers to the laboratory tests required to ensure compatibility between a patient’s blood and a transfusion of donated blood. This process includes patient identification, sample collection and labeling, and laboratory testing to determine the patient’s blood type and to screen for unexpected antibodies. In addition, compatibility of the donor and recipient’s blood must be determined by crossmatch. The pre-transfusion testing process is completed when a compatible blood product has been identified for transfusion to the patient.
Over time, automation has increasingly been adopted in clinical laboratories and blood banks, providing alternatives to the traditional method of manual tube testing for pre-transfusion testing. However, there are still scenarios where tube testing plays an important role. Please join Helmer Scientific and our guest speaker, Susan T. Johnson, MTSM, MT(ASCP)SBB, in our upcoming webinar “Options for Pre-transfusion Testing – Where Does Tube Testing Fit?” The live webinar will take place on Wednesday, November 7th, 2018 at 3pm Eastern time. Registration for this course is free and 1 hour of P.A.C.E.® credit is offered to participants.
