Who doesn’t like a road trip? Especially when you get to visit a college campus. For a group of Dream Alive scholars, the college road trip may be their only opportunity to visit a college campus and see what is available beyond high school.
This year marks the third annual college road trip for Dream Alive scholars. DREAM Alive, with the support of Helmer Scientific and other partners, offers the opportunity for high school students who are Dream Alive scholars to visit college campuses around the state of Indiana, providing a taste of what college is all about. Helmer provided support for three scholars to attend this year's monumental college experience.
Akil Jordan, a member of Helmer’s quality team, attended a similar event during high school. “Providing an avenue for youth to physically visit college campuses creates a connection that transmutes thoughts of attending college from a dream to a goal,” said Jordan. “My trip was at a young age, and it instilled in us a thought process that college comes after high school, so we’d better prepare and plan now. Any goal without a plan is a dream. This is a step in creating a plan to achieve that goal.”
Akil is now leading the efforts at Helmer to donate and become involved in DREAM Alive activities. DREAM Alive Scholars are 7th – 12th grade youth in at-risk communities working towards becoming civic-minded leaders. They receive site-based mentoring from staff and coaches until they graduate from high school.
