January is National Blood Donor Month

Posted on Jan 27, 2017 by Colleen Holtkamp

national-blood-donor-blog.jpgThe month of January was designated National Blood Donor Month in 1970. It is the time of year when blood centers face the biggest challenges in recruiting people to visit their local collection sites and donate. During the winter months donors’ schedules may be busier than usual due to holidays. In addition, illness due to cold and flu and difficult weather conditions may prevent even the most dedicated donors from being able to come in and give.

The demand for blood products persists throughout the winter months, so any reduction in collections can result in blood shortages. Therefore, each year in January blood centers and AABB celebrate the generosity of those who donate blood and platelets for the patients who need them. In addition to expressing gratitude to their donors, it is important to increase awareness of the need for blood during the holiday season and throughout the colder winter months.

Helmer Scientific would like to express our appreciation for the generosity of all blood donors, as well as to the blood center staff that collects, processes, and distributes these life-saving therapies. For more information, view our blood donation infographic.
